Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans in 2026

What changed this year, how extra benefits work, and how to compare plans side by side with confidence.

Understanding Medicare Advantage Plans in 2026

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. They bundle hospital and medical coverage, and many plans add prescription drug coverage along with extra benefits such as dental, vision and hearing.

Check the network first

Most Advantage plans use provider networks. Before you compare premiums, confirm that your doctors, specialists and preferred hospitals are in network, and review how referrals work.

Look beyond the premium

A zero-premium plan is not always the lowest-cost plan for you. Compare the maximum out-of-pocket limit, copays for the services you use most, and how your prescriptions are covered on each plan's formulary.

Review every year

Plans can change benefits, networks and drug lists each year. During the Annual Enrollment Period you can switch plans, so an annual review with your advisor helps make sure your coverage still fits.
